Energy-efficient battery charging.

Incentivizing sustainable driving via rewards, gamification, and humanization.

Introduction

As part of my internship at a leading global consultancy in 2022, I co-facilitated a design sprint in the automotive industry. Together with blockchain experts, our team addressed the question of how fleet companies can maximize the residual value of electric vehicles (EVs).

Process

Within a condensed period, our team framed the vision of our service, and covered the research methods sprint questioning, solution sketching, storyboarding, and prototyping. We conducted interviews with both automotive experts, as well as potential service end-users.

Outcome

Our team created a solution to battery degradation using SSI technology. Our service appeals to the users‘ emotions through humanization of a car battery and incentivizes EV drivers to charge in a battery- friendly way.

Expert research

After in-depth expert interviews before our sprint, we recognized a key issue in the lack of feeling of ownership and respective inefficient charging behavior in end-users of electric fleet cars.

Vision

Our vision to become a market standard for a B2B battery-friendly service gave us a long-term focus throughout the week.

Sprint questions

Our main concerns were “Can we convince OEMs to reward battery-friendly behavior in EV fleet users?” (B2B perspective) and “Can we find incentives that convince users to care about the health of their fleet vehicles’ battery?” (B2C perspective)

Solution Sketches

As initial ideation, each team member sketched their own idea of a service solution, for instance, the concept of different status tiers and rewards.

Storyboard and Prototyping

The team started to design a cohesive app with visualized battery health, including the portrayed ecological impact of saving energy. We connected crucial steps in the user journey to form an intuitive Figma prototype.

User testing and Sales pitch

Reconnecting to the end- user, we invited current EV drivers to test our prototype and analyzed their natural behavior in the flow. Different quotes and insights let us collect actionable outcomes and refine the service before creating a sales pitch for potential automotive companies.
